Pet food workers to learn fate today

Workers at the C and D pet food factory in Longford are to learn today about the future of their jobs.

Around 500 people were put out of work when a blaze devastated large sections of the factory last Sunday.

It was established in Edgeworthstown in 1969 by former Taoiseach Albert Reynolds and currently has contracts to supply major British supermarket chains including Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury.

Mr Reynold’s son Philip, who now manages and owns the C&D Pet Foods plant, is due to address the workforce about the future of the plant today.

The company has already informed the workforce that up to 120 workers may be re-employed within the next two weeks at the soft can section of the plant, which was not destroyed by the fire.
