Truckers' protest passes off without disruption

Up to 100 truckers have mounted a two-hour demonstration on the new Kilcock-Kinnegad bypass to protest against the high tolls being levied on the road.

The truckers gathered at the toll booths on the motorway between 7am and 9am and refused to pay to get through.

Trucks are being charged €6.20 to use the bypass, which the Irish Road Haulage Association says is unacceptable and must be reduced.

However, Eurolink, which operates the tolls, insists the charge represents value for money and is necessary to maintain the road.

Gardaí had warned motorists to expect major disruption during this morning's protest, but the IRHA said its members kept to the inside lane and commuters managed to get through without any difficulty.
