The Irish Cancer Society is planning a nationwide advertising campaign to pressure the Government into establishing free screening for all women.

The society said research had shown that screening for the condition can save many lives, but the Irish authorities only offer it in some areas.

Ireland has one of the highest incidences of cervical cancer in Europe, something that is frequently blamed on the lack of a national screening programme.
