Post mortem underway on man who died in garda custody

The State Pathologist is conducting a post mortem on the body of a man who died last night while in garda custody.

The 40-year-old man was arrested for an undisclosed offence shortly after 1.30am today in Monaghan.

According to the Gardaí, the man was discovered in an unconscious state in his cell about one hour later.

Efforts to resuscitate the man failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The State Pathologist is expected to carry out a post mortem on the man's body in Cavan General Hospital later today.
