A football tournament which sees homeless people and immigrants competing with gardaí is taking place in Dublin today.

Gardaí from Store St station are among the teams playing for the Jason Bowler and Kenneth Lyons trophies at Cabra Sports Park today.

The two cups are named after homeless men who died in the city in past years.

The gardaí will be playing teams from the immigrant community and the homeless, as well as squads from drug treatment centres.

Sean Kavanagh, the editor of Issues magazine and organiser of the Homeless Street League said the tournament gave the men something to play for.

“These teams would never integrate normally – it’s one of the few chances they get to meet each other and chat to each other and integrate,” he said.

Mr Kavanagh thanked Dublin City Council for their help in running the homeless league, which will be finishing its current competition at the event today.
