Nuclear watchdog says we are prepared for accidents abroad
Ireland's nuclear watchdog claims that we are well prepared to deal with a nuclear accident happening abroad.
Releasing its annual report today, the Radiological Protection Institute said we now have the procedures in place to cope with an emergency at Sellafield nuclear plant.
Doctor Ann McGarry of the Radiological Protection Institute said the new computerised systems will predict high levels of radioactivity before they can reach this country.
“If an accident happens at a particular location we can estimate what the levels of radioactivity in Ireland will be, and then based on those levels of radioactivity, we can determine what countermeasures may be implemented,” she explained.
