TDs sign up to tackle climate change ahead of talks in Montreal
More than 30% of Dáil deputies have already signed up to a pledge that Ireland will agree to do its fair share at the crucial talks on climate change in Canada next week.
The parliamentary group, which includes Government TDs, is supporting calls to cut carbon emissions by 60% of 1990 levels by the middle of the century.
Oisín Coughlan of Friends of the Earth said today that the politicians are waking up to the threat: “We think it is a fact that TDs are waking up to the threat that climate change poses, not just to our own prosperity here in Ireland, but to the poorest communities around the world who will be first and hardest hit.
“And so we are hopeful that the rest of the TDs will take this opportunity in the build-up to the international climate talks in Montreal next week to demonstrate their commitment to Ireland doing its fair share to tackle climate change.”
