TD: Parents must stop children buying fireworks

A Dáil TD has urged parents to ban their children from buying fireworks in the run-up to Halloween.

Fianna Fáil backbencher Barry Andrews said fireworks are currently being sold illegally on Dublin streets.

“Every year Accident and Emergency wards are filled with children who get horrific injuries at Halloween from using fireworks.

“It is a criminal offence to sell these products and the law must be strictly applied in this regard.

“Parents should report anybody selling fireworks to the gardaí.”

Nearly 1.5 tonnes of fireworks imported illegally from Asia were seized during the National Ploughing Championships in Co Cork last month.

Dealers can be fined or jailed under the Explosive Substances Act.

Police in Co Fermanagh yesterday seized £5,000 (€7,255) worth of fireworks at an outdoor market.
