Bike racer dies in Ballybunion
Motorbike racer Richard Britton was killed today in a road race in Co Kerry.
The 34-year-old died when he came off his motorcycle on the first lap of the 250cc race at Ballybunion.
The accident occurred around midday, a garda spokesman said.
Mr Britton, who was married with a five-year-old son, was born in England before moving to Northern Ireland where he was brought up in Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh.
He was regarded as one of the most talented road racers of his generation, who won national races throughout Ireland and was a multiple Irish and Ulster Road Race Champion.
He set a number of lap records in Irish races and was the Regal 600 champion on four occasions.
"Richard was a role model and an inspiration for many young racers as he went on to set lap records and win an impressive number of races throughout his career," said Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism John O’Donoghue.
"He will be truly missed by all involved in the sport of motorcycle road racing in Ireland and farther afield. I wish to extend my condolences and deepest sympathy to his wife Maria and his son Loris on their great loss."
