Dublin City Council is reportedly reviewing the safety of recent alterations to O'Connell Street in the wake of a serious bus accident yesterday afternoon.

Two British women aged 60 and 56 remain in hospital this afternoon after being struck by a double-decker Dublin Bus near the Spire monument at around 4.15pm.

The eldest of the two women is believed to be in a serious condition.

The accident happened at a pedestrian crossing alongside the new "plaza" that surrounds the Spire.

The two women are believed to have stepped out in front of the bus in an area where it is extremely difficult to tell where the kerb ends and the road begins.
