Social Welfare appeals down 10%
The number of people appealing social welfare decisions was down by 10% last year compared to 2003, according to the annual report of the Social Welfare Appeals Office.
The report, which was announced today by Séamus Brennan, Minister for Social and Family Affairs shows a drop of 1,100 appeals last year made in connection with decisions on social welfare allowances.
Last year, the office received 14,083 appeals concerning decisions on a wide range of allowances including old age pensions, lone parent allowances, disability benefit and unemployment benefit.
This compares to 15, 224 appeals made in 2003.
13% of appeals last year were withdrawn, while 40% were rejected.
Just under half of appeals were decided in favour of applicants.
