ComReg service to combat 'cold calling'

The Communications Regulator has announced a new service that will allow people with listed numbers to block phone calls from marketing companies.

The service is being introduced as part of an EU directive designed to crack down on so-called "cold calling".

ComReg said customers would receive details of how to prevent such calls from their telephone companies in the coming weeks.

The measure only applies to calls made within the State and to telephone numbers that are listed in public directories.
