Taoiseach congratulates new UUP leader

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern today congratulated Reg Empey on his election to the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party.

Mr Ahern said the 58-year-old former Stormont Economy Minister had been an able and skilful negotiator in the talks leading to the Good Friday Agreement.

“While always promoting the interests of unionism, he has, at the same time, been a respected and effective interlocutor with the Irish Government,” the Taoiseach said.

Mr Ahern said the politician’s experience and political ability well-qualified him for the new role.

“As Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment, he worked very effectively in promoting policies and programmes that delivered real benefits for the people of Northern Ireland.

"Moreover, during his period as acting First Minister, Sir Reg demonstrated both leadership skills and an ability to work well in partnership with others,” Mr Ahern said.

Mr Ahern said he was hopeful of an opportunity for an early meeting with Mr Empey and his party colleagues.

The Taoiseach said the UUP remained a significant player in Northern Ireland politics. “It has an important contribution to make in the ongoing collective efforts to promote political progress in Northern Ireland,” he said.

Mr Empey last night defeated his closest contender, Alan McFarland, by 321 votes to 287 to take over as leader of the party from David Trimble.
