Opposition continues attack on Govt over Garda reform
The opposition parties are attacking the Government for a third consecutive day over its attitude to Garda reform.
The matter is expected to be raised in the Dáil tomorrow as part of a discussion of the Morris Tribunal’s second report.
The report recommended that the Oireachtas review the proposed Garda Bill, but the Government is refusing to allow such a review and has insisted that its own unilateral amendments are enough to alleviate the tribunal’s concerns.
However, Labour Party leader Pat Rabbitte said today that this obviously fell short of Justice Frederick Morris’s recommendations.
Mr Rabbitte also demanded that TDs be allowed vote on a motion relating to the Morris Tribunal tomorrow, rather than just read statements into the record as is currently planned.
Fine Gael TD Richard Bruton, meanwhile, also attacked the format of tomorrow’s debate, saying it was not adequate.
