Goal's O'Shea calls on Govt to tackle Ethiopian 'brutality'

The director of the charity organisation Goal, John O'Shea, has called on the Irish Government to demand an immediate explanation from Ethiopia after its police shot dead 26 demonstrators in Addis Ababa on Wednesday.

Mr O’Shea questioned whether our Government should continue to deal with regimes capable of such brutality, which he compared to the Tiananmen Square massacre in China 16 years ago.

The protesters were demonstrating against what they believed to be rigged elections.

He said: "The Irish people deserve an explanation for this.After all, €30m of our taxpayers' money is ginen to the Ethiopian government every year. I honestly believe that we should not be dealing with a government which behaves in this brutal manner."
