Dept of Marine to respond to €5m scallops plan
The Department of the Marine is due to respond to a €5m plan by scallop fishermen in Kilmore Quay today.
The fishermen are threatening to blockade more ports unless they get a compensation deal, following EU changes to scallop fishing regulations.
They claim that enforcement of the new regulations would threaten their livelihoods, by cutting the number of days spent fishing to 60 a year.
Thousands of passengers were prevented from coming ashore at Rosslare Harbour on Monday, as fishermen protested by blockading the port with their boats.
