Majority of motorists support random breath-testing

The overwhelming majority of Irish motorists support random breath-testing in an effort to crack down on drink-driving, according to a survey commissioned by the National Safety Council.

The council said almost 86% of the 500 respondents to the survey said they would back such a move, with 72% saying they were strongly in favour.

Almost two-fifths of respondents admitted to driving after having consumed alcohol on at least one occasion in the past 12 months, but this includes motorists who would only have consumed a small amount.

Half of respondents said they would support a move to have zero alcohol limits for Irish motorists.

The survey was published today to coincide with the launch of the National Safety Council’s Arrive Alive summer road safety campaign, which focuses on drink-driving.
