SIPTU workers vote for strike over Shannon Airport redundancies

Workers at Shannon Airport have voted by a 90% majority in favour of industrial action over planned redundancies.

The ballot result backs SIPTU shop stewards who are against proposals to outsource catering and cleaning jobs.

The union said that the cuts are not in line with assurances received from the Government.

SIPTU National Industrial Secretary Mick Halpenny insisted that there would be no outsourcing.

“Anything that we have to do with in this company will be on the basis of direct employment,” he insisted.
