A 30-year-old man killed in a tragic shooting accident on St Patrick's Day was named today as Darren Kiely from Co Limerick.

A native of Patrickswell, the 30-year-old suffered a fatal gun shot wound to the head while out shooting targets with a friend at lunchtime yesterday.

Tragedy struck when Mr Kiely was accidently shot by his friend in a secluded laneway beside a farm at Faha, Ballyhanrahan located outside the village of Patrickswell.

A post mortem carried out on the dead man earlier today by Deputy State Pathologist Margaret Bolster, confirmed that he died from a single gun shot wound to his head.

Investigating gardaí have not officially confirmed the sequence of events that led to the accident but it is understood that Mr Kiely was standing in front of his friend when he was accidently shot.

Gardaí have confirmed that Mr Kiely's friend and former work collegue has provided them with a full statement and no-one else is being sought in relation to the incident.

"This was a tragic accident and of course the person who was with the deceased is deeply shocked," said a garda spokesman.

"The exact details are still under investigation but we are satisfied that it was an accident and no-one else is being sought in relation to our investigation."

Originally from Patrickswell in Co Limerick Mr Kiely had recently moved to Limerick city and is survived by his parents and partner.
