Gardaí sieze firearms in Limerick

Fifteen rounds of ammunition and a sawn-off shotgun were seized by gardaí in Limerick last night as part of their ongoing crackdown on criminal activity in the city.

The firearm and ammunition were uncovered in wasteland in the Delmege Park area of Moyross on the north side of the city.

This latest haul comes just 24 hours after gardaí found €½m worth of cannabis and a rifle with a telescopic sight in the same area.

Three rounds of ammunition were also found on Wednesday morning in a house in Ballgrennan Close, also located in Moyross.

A man and a woman arrested in connection with this seizure were released from garda custody and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The haul took place shortly after 7pm and all of the items seized have been sent to Dublin for forensic examination.

Meanwhile, it has also emerged that a prisoner is recovering at Limerick Regional Hospital following a stabbing incident in Limerick Prison yesterday.

It's understood the victim is a member of a leading criminal gang in the city.

Gardaí are investigating the possibility that the attack may be linked to the ongoing high-profile Limerick feud.

The prisoner’s condition was described tonight as "serious but stable" and he is expected to make a full recovery.
