Psychiatrists seek better treatment services for alcoholics
The Irish College of Psychiatrists has called for improved treatment services for people with alcohol abuse problems.
The college said it welcomed recommendations on the prevention of alcohol abuse contained in the latest report from the Government's strategic task force on alcohol.
However, it also said the area of specialist treatment needed to be developed.
Spokesman Dr Bobby Smith said: "We think the number one priority is the development of multi-disciplinary, specialist, out-patient teams that are available in each community care area.
"These can provide local expert services, can provide supports to GPs and hospitals in their area and then also provide treatment directly to patients with more serious alcohol problems."
