New national standard for door security launched

Door security is to have a recognised benchmark level under the new National Standards Authority of Ireland standard for security services in Ireland.

The standard – IS 999:2004 – extends the previous standard but includes door and event security personnel for the first time.

Minister for Trade Michael Ahern said: “This new standard will be the key benchmark for professionalism and training in a rapidly-expanding sector and is a very positive step for the industry."

The private security industry involves about 600 companies and employs 25,000 people.

The new standard has been developed in consultation between the NSAI, the Private Security Authority (PSA) and the industry.

National Standards Authority chairman Dan Tierney said: “We believe there is widespread interest from the industry participants in getting accreditation to this new standard and the NSAI is open for business on that front.

"We expect everyone in this sector of the private security industry to seek accreditation from us to this new Standard."

Chief executive of the Private Security Authority, Geraldine Larkin, added: “This new NSAI standard will form a key licensing requirement for companies involved in security guarding, door security and event security.”
