Motorists urged to take extra care at Luas junctions

Motorists were today warned to heed traffic lights and road markings at Luas junctions following an accident in which five people were injured.

An articulated lorry collided with a Luas tram on the Red line at Queen Street, in the Smithfield area of Dublin at a signal-controlled junction.

A Luas spokeswoman said: “It does highlight the need for all road users and motorists to obey traffic signals.”

She added that the company would be co-operating with the Garda investigation.

The Luas tram was derailed when it was hit side-on by the lorry at around 9pm yesterday. The five passengers who sustained injuries were taken to the Mater Hospital for treatment.

The drivers of the Luas tram and the lorry were both treated for shock.

Services between the Blackhorse stop and Connolly station were temporarily suspended before returning to normal this morning.

There have been a series of accidents on the Red Line from Tallaght to Connolly station, with most of them blamed on motorists jumping red lights.
