Poll date cave-in denied

A Government spokesperson tonight rejected claims that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern was forced to opt for an early by-election date because of opposition pressure.

Mr Ahern and Tánaiste Mary Harney had a brief discussion on the issue this morning before the main Cabinet meeting.
