Three-year-old girl drowns in Monaghan canal

A three-year-old girl has drowned after she fell into the disused Ulster Canal near Monaghan town yesterday afternoon.

Eva O'Reilly is believed to have been playing on the banks of the canal a short distance from her home in Cortolvin View when she slipped into the water and drowned.

Her body was recovered a short time later and she was pronounced dead at Monaghan General Hospital at around 4.30pm.

The little girl had been adopted from Russia by her Irish parents around two years ago.
