President Mary McAleese is due to attend a commemoration in Poland today to mark the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp.

More than one million people, the overwhelming majority of them Jews, were killed at the Nazi death camp, which was established by Hitler's Third Reich in 1940.

The camp was liberated by the Soviet Army on January 27, 1945.
