Suspicious device 'may be marine flare'

A suspicious device which washed up along the coastline of Donegal is believed to be a marine flare, it emerged today.

The three-foot long aluminium cylinder was spotted off Cloughglass beach in Burtonport yesterday.

An army spokesman said the device, located in shallow waters off the beach, was believed to be a flare from a naval vessel.

“It’s potentially dangerous if children got hold of it,” he said.

A four-man army bomb disposal unit will examine the device at around 2pm today when the tide is at its lowest.

Gardaí have sealed off the area close to the device.
