President McAleese kicks off Cork's Year of Culture

President Mary McAleese officially marked the beginning of Cork's tenure as European Capital of Culture today.

Some 85,000 people poured into the city to mark the event.

The president was joined by ambassadors and citizens from across the EU for the opening of what promises to be an historic year for Cork.
