State unable to account for mountain of uncollected waste
The State is reportedly unable to account for almost 300,000 tonnes of household waste that went uncollected by local authorities last year.
Reports this morning said that neither the Department of the Environment nor the Environmental Protection Agency was able to say what happened to the rubbish.
The EPA reportedly believes that much of it was disposed of by householders in legal landfill sites, but the agency has also conceded that people could be burning or illegally dumping the waste.
