The Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, has praised the response of the Irish people to the tsunami disaster in the Indian Ocean.

In his new year message, Archbishop Eames said the Irish had once again proved their compassion and generosity in their reaction to the disaster, which has killed around 150,000 people.

He also asked Irish people to show similar kindness when dealing with one another, saying they would never be at peace with themselves without compassion and generosity within their communities.
