Special courts 'could combat drug abuse'
Nationwide drug treatment courts could help stamp out drug abuse in society, it was claimed tonight.
In the special courts, drug offenders are offered the chance of staying out of prison if they undergo intensive treatment and rehabilitation.
One such drug treatment court was successfully piloted in Dublin last year.
But Fianna Fail TD Jimmy Devins wants to set up the courts on a nationwide basis as part of the Government’s overall drugs strategy.
“By emphasising treatment rather than incarceration, drug treatment courts can help reduce the tremendous burden of substance abuse, and its related health, social and economic costs on society,” said the GP and Oireachtas Health Committee vice-chairman.
“Expanding the programme shows how we can work together – governments, communities and individuals – to reduce crime by dealing with its root causes.”
Dr Devins said he will be urging action on his proposals from Health minister Mary Harney at the next meeting of the Oireachtas Health Committee later this month.
