Christmas swimmers advised not to drink

Thousands of people taking part in annual Christmas Day swims are being advised not to drink if they're planning a dip.

Thousands of people taking part in annual Christmas Day swims are being advised not to drink if they're planning a dip.

Most of the events being held to raise money for various charities around the country and organisers are being asked to alert the Irish Coastguard to their activities.

Roger Sweeney of Irish Water Safety has said that some people with medical conditions should not take part.

He said that people with heart conditions and similar ailments should avoid the cold water at this time of year as the temperature of the water will be below 50°F.

People that are participating should get in and out of the water as quickly as possible and dry off well, he said.
