The Society of St Vincent de Paul has reported a 60% increase in requests for help so far this year.

The charity made the revelation at the launch of its annual report for 2003, which showed that the SVP spent €600,000 per week last year fighting poverty and social exclusion, with spending on essentials like food, clothes and fuel up 7.4%.
