Motorway protesters march through Dublin

Almost 200 people have marched through Dublin's O'Connell Street to protest against the proposed construction of the M3 motorway through ancient remains near the hill of Tara.

The Government is considering the possible excavation of over 40 individual monuments in and around the site at a cost of €30m.

Speaking at the protest, Vincent Salafia of the "Save Tara" group said that lessons have been learnt from the Carrickmines campaign.

“Nobody wants a repeat of Carrickmines, it was a lose-lose situation. We want the Government to take on the idea that this is the centrepiece of our national heritage and that the Irish people deserve better – they deserve a motorway and they deserve their heritage to be preserved,” he said.
