A support group for single parents has called for changes in the law and the Constitution to protect the rights of children living in one-parent families.

The group, One Family, is holding a conference in Dublin today to highlight the social exclusion problems often faced by such children.

Spokesperson Karen Kiernan said: "What we'd like to see is children in one-parent families actually in the Constitution. That way they will be given protection recognition and protection and cherished as equally as all other children in the country."
