Boy killed as animal bolts

A post mortem is to be carried out in Co Kerry today on the body of a five-year-old boy who was killed in a freak accident when his donkey bolted.

The incident happened shortly before 6pm yesterday.

The boy was walking a donkey belonging to his family around a field in Lauragh near Killarney.

The donkey had a rope around its neck which was tied to the boy's wrist.

The animal bolted, dragging the boy around the field.

The alarm was raised by the boy's seven-year-old sister.

An ambulance arrived and the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.
