Canadian submarine drifting off Donegal coast

Bad weather is hampering rescuers' efforts to reach a Canadian submarine that is currently drifting without power 100 miles off the Donegal coast.

The Chicoutimi was en route from the UK to Canada when a fire in an electrical panel crippled the vessel yesterday afternoon.

Nine of the 57 crew on board were treated for smoke inhalation after the blaze was brought under control.

An RAF helicopter has already reached the submarine, which is on the surface of the water, and two other helicopters based in the North are on standby.

A number of vessels are also en route to the scene to assist the rescue, but bad weather is hampering their efforts.
