Schoolkids making draw for Newgrange solstice

Local schoolchildren will make the draw today to see who will be allowed into the ancient monument at Newgrange in Co Meath on this year's winter solstice.

Light floods into the inner chamber of the monument at dawn during the shortest days of the year, but only 50 people can fit inside to witness the phenomenon.

The Newgrange Visitor Centre said 24,000 people had applied for a place in the monument this year, most of whom would have visited Newgrange earlier in the year.
