Arthritis drug Vioxx withdrawn due to safety fears

Thousands of Irish arthritis patients have been advised to contact their doctor after a drug used to treat the aliment was withdrawn from circulation worldwide yesterday.

Merck and Co, the company that makes Vioxx, took the product off the shelf after new tests confirmed that it increased the risk of heart attack and stroke.
