Donegal marchers demand action on jobs crisis
Hundreds of people marched through the streets of Letterkenny today calling for action on the unemployment crisis in Donegal.
The rally came as the 300 workers at UNIFI in the town rejected the latest redundancy offer negotiated with the Labour Relations Commission.
The plant will close its doors at the end of next month and the unions now hope to take their case to the Labour Court next week.
Today’s protestors were joined by the mayors of Derry, Letterkenny and Buncrana, as they called for increased cross-border cooperation in attracting jobs and infrastructure to the county.
Joe McHugh, a Fine Gael Senator for the north west, says something needs to be done immediately and this will only happen if there is a change in the Fianna Fáil coalition.
He said the government has turned its back on the people of Donegal by turning their backs on the escalating jobs crisis in the region.
