Most Irish adults are unaware they should eat no more than six grammes of salt per day, according to a survey conducted by the Irish Heart Foundation.

The survey was published by the foundation at the launch of Irish Heart Week, which takes place next week.

The Heart Foundation said 80% of salt intake by Irish people came from processed foods, fast food, and meals sold in canteens and restaurants.

Speaking at today's launch, Health Minister Micheál Martin claimed a reduction in salt intake could prevent up to 900 deaths every year.
