Salafia seeks legal advice about entering presidential race

Presidential candidate Vincent Salafia has said he will seek legal advice over the alleged agreement between Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael on the forthcoming election.

He has questioned whether the political parties are acting illegally by preventing candidates from contesting the presidential election, which is scheduled for October 22.

Mr Salafia has taken court action to prevent work taking place on the M50 motorway at Carrickmines in Dublin and is seeking 20 Oireachtas signatures to run for president.

Fine Gael is already putting its weight behind Mary McAleese. Candidates like Mr Salafia and Dana Rosemary Scallon are finding it difficult to get backing in order to enter the race.

With 10 days left before nominations close, Mr Salafia has said he is getting legal advice on the rules for entering the presidency.
