Patrick St pedestrian plan shelved

The proposed pedestrianisation of Cork’s main thoroughfare, Patrick’s Street, has been scrapped by the City Council, it was revealed today as the street’s €13m revamp was launched, the Evening Echo reports.

Traffic flow studies into the impact of making the street a no-go area for cars revealed it would create traffic problems elsewhere in the city centre, according to the City Manager, Joe Gavin.

However, the city council is open to pedestrianising the street for events and public festivals — such as the hugely successful European Day of Welcomes last May.

Today is European Car Free Day and the street was shut off to cars as the Lord Mayor, City Manager and City Councillors, all dressed in ceremonial robes, marched from Daunt Square to Patrick Street bridge to mark the opening of the street.
