Study highlights literacy crisis in disadvantaged areas

A study conducted for the Department of Education has reportedly found that more than 30% of primary school pupils in disadvantaged areas have severe literacy problems.

A study conducted for the Department of Education has reportedly found that more than 30% of primary school pupils in disadvantaged areas have severe literacy problems.

Reports this morning said the research conducted by St Patrick’s College in Dublin found that the number of children with learning difficulties in poorer areas was three times higher than in other schools.

It also found that the percentage of high-achieving pupils in poorer areas was less than half the national average of 10%.
