SIPTU defends Brinks workers' actions

SIPTU has rejected attempts by business organisations to blame Brinks Allied workers for the dispute affecting cash-dispensing machines in the east of the country.

The company’s staff are refusing to operate new security vans introduced in an effort to combat a spate of armed raids.

The workers believe the new vans jeopardise their health and safety. Around 160 non-branch ATMs have already run out of cash because of the dispute and up to 80 bank branches could be affected over the weekend if a resolution is not found quickly.

Business groups have accused the Brinks workers of causing the cash shortages by taking unofficial industrial action, but SIPTU said all ATMs would be full this weekend if the company allowed staff to work normally.
