A cross-border health group has saved the North’s only decompression chamber from closure.

The Co-operation and Working Together group has provided £200,000 (€301,000) to Craigavon Area Hospital in Co Armagh to replace its existing chamber.

The chamber allows people to breathe oxygen under pressure and is crucial for treating divers who surface too quickly.

Craigavon Hospital is also looking at other uses for the tank, which could be used to treat carbon monoxide poisoning or to help heal wounds more quickly.
