Ex-soldier's murder: Man remanded

A 21-year-old man was remanded in custody today charged with the murder of a former soldier.

A 21-year-old man was remanded in custody today charged with the murder of a former soldier.

Mark Sweeney, from Finisklin, Sligo is accused of killing 42-year-old Paul Waters, from Avondale, Sligo.

Mr Waters’ body was found in an alleyway in Sligo town on Tuesday. He had suffered multiple blows to the head.

He was stationed in Co Donegal with the 28th Infantry Battalion for five years from 1980 and had served in the the Lebanon. It is believed in more recent years he lived with his elderly mother.

Mr Sweeney, who was arrested in Sligo yesterday, and will appear before the court again on August 5.
