Spaniard chosen as president of Euro Parliament

MEPs have elected Spaniard Josep Borrell as the new president of the European Parliament.

Mr Borrell, a member of Spain’s ruling Socialist Party, was selected ahead of two other candidates for the job.

He will replace Pat Cox, who has been president of the parliament since January 2002.

Mr Borrell was chosen by the 732 newly-elected MEPs who are meeting in Strasbourg today for the first time since last month’s elections.
