Major security probe launched in NI

A possible breach of military security at a major police complex in Belfast was being investigated by the British army and police tonight.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said it had been called in to investigate a possible internal breach of security at the Castlereagh police complex in the east of the city.

A police spokesman said the possible breach did not involve police security and is not thought to involve a break-in.

One person, believed to be a military employee, was being questioned, she added.

A spokesman for British army headquarters in Northern Ireland confirmed the possible security breach centred around its premises in the security complex.

He said: “We can confirm that the military are assisting the PSNI in an investigation into a possible internal breach of security at military premises in the PSNI Castlereagh complex.”

It was at the same Castlereagh base in March 2002 that offices of special branch were broken into, creating a major security alert into what documents may have been seen by paramilitaries.
