New police team to investigate murder of Derry GAA official

The family of a Co Derry man murdered by loyalist paramilitaries seven years ago has reached agreement with the police on a new inquiry into the killing.

Sixty-year-old GAA official Sean Brown was abducted in Bellaghy in May 1997 and was found shot dead a short time later.

There have long been allegations that the police colluded with his killers.

The Police Ombudsman, in a report published earlier this year, recommended that an independent investigation be established as the original police investigation into the murder was deficient.

Mr Brown’s son, Damien, said yesterday that his family had now agreed with the PSNI chief constable that a new police team, including British detectives, would be drafted in to conduct a fresh investigation.
